Tips for moving into a new house:
1. Move in a few days early
The first day we moved in we found out if we could move in a few days earlier. This helped give us a head start. We were able to figure out if there was anything we needed to clean up before moving in and get a feel of the new place.
2. Walk Around
We first walked around the neighborhood and surrounding area. What was within walking distance? What could we see, touch, smell, experience around us? We feel that if we do this, we are able to get a sense of what our area is like to get a little bit more familiar with unfamiliar territory. Walked around the area we would be working at. Seeing where we would spend the most amount of our time.
- Bulletin Boards. Took pictures of the bulletin boards. We found out what community activities were already going on around us. (As a side note, we also hope to start some of our own community activities.)
- If there aren’t physical bulletin boards near you or near walking distance, maybe check Facebook to see if there are any neighborhood groups.
3. Food
Where is the closest place where we could buy food? We did some research on the Yelp app. This was helpful because there were some shopping areas that weren’t as safe or friendly as other parts of the area.
4. Community Activities
Find out about Community Activities. Went to the library near us. This is a great idea because there are even more events going on that the city holds – many are free! Also, fun ideas for families, young children, and teens.
5. Contacted Local Church Leaders
Called and asked for activity recommendations from our local church leaders. I think this was the best option for us because the church members we talk to normally have very similar values as we do and are able to give us recommendations that are more fitting to what’s in line with our values.
6. Chatted with People From The Area
This may not be applicable to everyone, but we met with someone who was familiar with the area and they gave us a small introduction to what animals were around and what the weather was typically like in the area. Surprisingly, the results he told us were different than what we saw on the weather app because we didn’t account for the amount of wind we would get and the difference in humidity levels. All of which play into what the weather is actually like. Knowing what types of wild animals, pests, and insects were nearby was also helpful so that we could keep safe and know what to be aware of.
Hope this list helps you! I know I will be personally referring to this as we continue to move across the country!
