Have you considered downloading an app but weren’t sure if it would be worth your time, or useful to strengthen the relationships around you? There are so many out there and so many companies wanting our attention. I feel that it is so important for me to find apps that support my minimalist lifestyle.
I feel that nowadays, many people are wanting to crack down on the clutter and only invest in things that will strengthen our lifestyle values! This will bring us more joy as we have a laser focus on what matters to us most!
So get out your phones, I am sure that you are going to find at least one of these apps to use and love!
Here are some useful apps that I have found that have strengthened relationships!
Marriage
Lasting: Marriage & Couples
What it does: This app claims that 94% of those who use it, report stronger relationships.
What you do is pair your app with your partner’s app. Both you and your significant other answer the questions the app gives you. You are able to respond in simple answers – a lot of which the app provides. This cuts down on a lot of time while you’re able to learn. This makes it MUCH easier to finish a session and propels you to want to continue learning!
My husband and I did a 6-month trial and were able to finish quite a few of the lessons. However, I will say that we have learned THE MOST from the PREPARE/ENRICH assessment we took.
Why you need it: This app was fantastic for on-the-go learning and reflecting.
Love Nudge
What it does: It is a resource that has been created by the famous book, “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts” by Gary Chapman.
His book has helped millions of couples all over the world come closer to each other as they learn how to speak a new language – the language of their significant other. The app will be sure to spark some ideas on how to love your spouse in unique ways!
We’ve downloaded this app on and off again when we feel like we are needing a refresh.
Why you need it: It is free! You will find that it is filled with specific ideas on how to “speak” your lover’s language.
EveryDollar
What it does: BEST.APP.EVER for doing finances. I have tried Mint, and Trubill, and looked into many others. My experience is that those options either seemed too overwhelming or were too glitchy. Not too user-friendly. Nothing is as streamlined and simple as this one! It really can’t be beaten in my eyes. I like things clean-cut and easy….not a million buttons to push. Just dragging and dropping to categorize the transitions is priceless for me.
It makes it so easy to sit down with my husband on Sundays and go through that week’s budget. And if I ever was curious where I am as far as my budget and how much I have left to spend, I can look at those categories quickly – just like having the envelope system that Jordan Pages uses with only two envelops to be in charge of… instead of having a ton like the Dave Ramsey program suggests. But really, any system is fantastic! This is just what has worked for us.
Why you need it: Extremely easy to categorize transactions! Easy to go through your budget quickly and see where you are at!
Children
Marco Polo
My husband introduced me to this app shortly after it had been launched. To be honest, I was skeptical at first (like most things) because it was free and claimed to not work through third parties. I was wondering how they even earned money! Turns out, they weren’t getting really any money in the beginning days from what it sounds like and the app was made possible by a man who invested in the company and said it was a great idea for the founder, Vlada Bortnik, to start! I loved listening to their story on the Chatbooks Podcast (The MomForce Podcast). Listen to the whole story HERE on apple podcasts.
What it does: The app has been a hit favorite in our home. We have loved keeping in touch with family members! Not to mention, we can save the videos and they don’t take up as much room if we don’t choose to film them in high quality. It has made it so we keep more “in the moment”, authentic type videos.
One of the things we have loved about the app is that it is easy for families to see the children growing up and catch them doing and saying the cutest things!
Why you need it: We also have created a couple of Marco Polo book club groups where the kids are able to listen to books that their grandma reads to them or our neighbors. The best part is that it’s free! And it’s ad-free! No popups! Easy to listen to in the car while you’re waiting for something.
Lickety Split
Okay, this one may seem super random… well, because it is! This app has definitely changed my relationship with our children… especially at night when everyone seems to be a little bit more on edge.
What it does: It is an amazing app that basically is similar to BrightMusic (my mom used to play BrightMusic pretty much every morning and night and on Saturdays). However, the BEST part is that it’s an app! Okay… what is it? It is an app that has a classical music song that plays and the children are challenged to finish the job (for example, brushing their teeth, getting PJs on, cleaning the room, etc.). I really don’t know why it works, but it works for motivation! Everyone is happier in the end!
Why you need it: It’s a gentle way to help motivate your children to get things done! I would love to hear how you have liked using it and if you’ve found the same results! Comment below.
Friends/Neighbors
Hobnob
What it does: This app is an amazing virtual invitation maker! You are able to send an invitation via text message or email. And with one tap, the invitees are able to add the event to their apple/google calendar. It creates beautiful invitations too!
Why you need it: You are able to quickly make an event and invite others to it quickly!
Peanut
What it does: Peanut was an amazing mom-friend app and I LOVED making new friendships on it. I met up with several other moms! I learned so much from those around me. Some of my best friendships have come from meeting those women on the app. Once I felt like I got to meet the friends I wanted to meet, I deleted the app.
Another amazing part of the app was that one of the ladies on there set up a free music class for toddlers. A group of us met at her house and our children loved it so much that we paid her for weekly lessons. The group of all of us moms in that class grew fast friends and ended up meeting for monthly girls’ night outs! We made some amazing and fun memories!
Why you need it: To find a friend or group of friends in a similar stage as you!
Personal Favorites
Chatbooks
What it does: We love sitting down and going through our family pictures, life stories, and yearly events. Sundays are especially a fun time that I feel is when we make the time most to relax and remember our past. There is so much research on the power of telling stories! You can find out more about the research on their blog!
One of my favorite things is watching my children flip through the small books. We like to bring them to church so that the children can look through the mini books and not make as much noise.
I also have made several “baby scrapbooks” using Chatbooks.
Why you need it: It is simple, user-friendly, clean, modern, and pretty minimalist! You can put together books much more quicker this way!
Slidebox
What it does: Speaking of pictures, if your child has gotten ahold of your phone and has taken a lot of pictures, or you just have a hard time controlling how many pictures you take (guilty), this Slidebox app will change.your.life.!
Why you need it: You can swipe quickly to categorize your pictures into folders. And it actually converts! Whatever action or folder you create while sipping through your pictures, will be made on your iPhone photos app. You can delete photos. And it tells you how much you have accomplished with organizing your photos. This is a nice feature to look back and realize you did make a difference.
What I usually do is categorize the folders by naming them by month and year. Then it’s easier to quickly create a photobook as we talked about earlier. ;). You’re welcome!
I am
What it does: You will LOVE THIS APP. It has the option to put a widget on your phone screen with customized affirmations that pop up throughout the day. I personally have two widgets that pop up with affirmations.
Why you need it: It’s a gentle reminder of my goals and a subtle reminder throughout the day to change my mindset to think in the affirmative.
*As a side note, there is no way to contact the actual creators of the app. (I tried). So if you do run into any problems, you won’t be able to get ahold of the developers. Unless you make a review on the Apple iTunes store possibly.
ThinkUp
What it does: ThinkUp is filled with hundreds of affirmations phrases! It has been a hit on my phone for years. I have used it on a regular basis to help me come up with ideas of what to write for my affirmations for the day.
Why you need it: You use our voice for the affirmations so you can hear yourself say the affirmations. You can also listen to epic music, (on a different app), in the background, while listening to the affirmations. Super fun pump-up combo!
Day One
What it does: This is a journaling app that feels like it does everything! That’s probably why it is currently has a 4.8 average rating with 71,000+ reviews and won the Editors’ Choice Apps award.
There literally is so much to love about this app. You can do voice recordings, add pictures, create several journals for different topics, have the app text you a daily journal prompt, customize the questions for it to ask you, and probably more that I haven’t figured out yet!
Why you need it: Back in the day, I used to like an app called, “Grids.” You would customize questions for the app to ask you every day and answer them. (Day One does these customized questions which is great!). However, Day One soon became a favorite because I found out it had better options on what to do with all of the journal prompts. It has several options on how to export your words. My favorite option is to print the journal to a hard copy (and this can be done for a pretty good price too!). On the Grid app, you could only upload on either Boxdrop or into a PDF form… and that was just too much work. Day One is by far the better choice for a journal app.
